AUSTIN, Texas — AUSTIN — The Austin American-Statesman newspaper has received a $6 million federal grant that will allow it to expand its digital newsroom and improve its ability to provide high-quality journalism, its owners said Tuesday.
The $5.2 million grant, which will be used to help pay for a $2 million expansion and $1 million hiring, will allow the newspaper to expand to 15 digital-only newsrooms and expand its newsroom operations in Austin, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami and Washington, D.C., the paper’s owners said.
The newsroom will be the second largest newsroom in the world and the fifth-largest newspaper in the United States.
The newspaper has been in Austin since 2013 and has had its headquarters at 575 West Sixth St. since 2014.
Its digital-exclusive digital platform, called Austin360, offers a variety of content including news, features, videos, podcasts, photos, video games and music.
