A reporter dies after being shot in the leg in Oregon

A reporter for a local Oregon newspaper has died after being struck in the left leg during an attempted burglary, police said Friday.

The shooting happened Wednesday night near the Portland City Council chambers.

Police said a male suspect was seen running into the building in an attempt to break into the council chambers, where members are seated.

Officers responding to the scene spotted the suspect, who ran toward the building before being shot by a man who had approached the building, police spokeswoman Laura Loomis said.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, Loomi said.

No one else was in custody.
